about

The Story Behind “The Crime”
It was early November in 2019, when I started playing the first chords of what would become “The Crime”. After the melody bounced around and I had the structure down; it had a noir quality, so I began to think in terms of criminal intentions. Naturally, this led to the news of the day and our modern Teflon Don. I think we all had become aware of his trickster ability to escape all danger, decency and accountability. This idea began to form around magicians and the slight-of-hand. I especially like the line “and what they have us do is never look outside the frame,” which is a reference to political misdirection and deception.

lyrics

Here’s the plan one more time do it quick it’s a crime
Make the jump into night don’t look back at the shining light
and what we’re doing now is trying to ease the pain
bodies pile up and then we start all over again
It’s a trick up the sleeve with an end we believe
How this guy wrapped in chains gets out quick and tricks again
and what I’m saying now is that you can take the pain
Bandage up the wounds c’mon let’s do it again
It’s a nightmare in a dream with an end we believe
Now in horror we all scream as the knife is pulled from the sleeve
And what they’d have us do is never look outside the frame
Where the body’s cut in two and there’s still no one to blame
